Terms for Online Poker Strategies

Online poker games are chockfull of jargon. Players love to use their special language to communicate about all aspects of the game. In addition to the lingo used to describe the processes of online poker, there are also nicknames that describe player strategies. Poker strategies are varied in their approaches to the game; players use them in both real money and free poker. Not surprisingly, these strategies have all been given nicknames to help identify them when discussing online poker games and plays.

Bluffing is the most commonly known poker strategy. It involves tricking players into thinking that one’s hand is better or worse than it really is. Players can bluff if they have a bad hand by raising bets higher and higher until players are eliminated. Players can bluff if they have a good hand by simply calling bets so as not to alert anyone to their amazing hand. This way, the other players stay in the game and continue to contribute money to the pot. This type of play is also called sandbagging or slow playing. A semi-bluff is the term used for a player who bluffs while there are still cards waiting to be drawn. This player bluffs without knowing for sure whether or not their hand will turn out to be good in the end.

Getting away from bluffing, it’s quite common to begin online poker games with a limp-in. This strategy calls for a player to call the big blind instead of raising a higher bet.
